## How the calculation works

Every result on this page starts with an official consumer price index. A price index tracks what a fixed basket of goods and services costs in each year, so comparing the index of two years tells you how much more money you need today to buy the same things. We multiply your amount by the ratio of the two index values. Nothing is estimated or modelled by us.

When the two currencies differ, a second step is needed, and there is no single correct order. Adjusting for inflation in the original currency and then converting at today's exchange rate answers what that old money would buy abroad now. Converting first at the historical rate and then adjusting for inflation in the target country answers what would have happened if you had exchanged the money back then. Both are shown; the first is the default because it needs only one exchange rate and is the convention most statistical offices use.

Coverage differs by country because official statistics do. Each currency shows its own first year, and years without published data are simply not offered. Where a currency was redenominated, such as the Turkish lira in 2005 or the Brazilian real in 1994, amounts from before the change are converted into current units automatically and the page tells you the factor used.

## Data sources

Consumer price indices come from the World Bank's FP.CPI.TOTL series, which harmonises national statistics for about 190 economies onto one base year. The euro area uses the European Central Bank's HICP, because the World Bank publishes no index for the currency union itself. Recent United States years are chained onto the CPI-U series published by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, since the World Bank release lags roughly a year. Exchange rates are European Central Bank reference rates from 1999 onward, extended further back through a commercial historical rates provider. Everything is refreshed automatically each night and the exact series behind any single result is named underneath it.

## What you can build with it

The same numbers are available as a free JSON API with no key and no sign-up, so the calculator is only one way to reach them. Common uses are salary and pension comparisons across decades, adjusting historical prices in articles and research, sanity-checking figures quoted in the news, teaching material about compound inflation, and spreadsheet models that need a defensible price index rather than a guess.

## Limits worth knowing

Three limits matter when you read a result. First, everything here is annual: a year is the average of twelve monthly readings, so a purchase made in January is treated exactly like one made in December, and short sharp price moves inside a year disappear. Second, a national price index tracks a national basket, not your basket; housing, education, healthcare and technology can move very differently from the average, so a result answers what money did on average rather than what it did for you. Third, cross-currency answers depend on an exchange rate as well as two price indices, and exchange rates move for reasons that have nothing to do with inflation, which is exactly why the two calculation methods can disagree. Treat every figure as a well-sourced estimate of scale, and quote the source line under it whenever the number matters.
